Elmbridge Court Roundabout

Author Lloyd Preston Calendar 21 November 2018

No more going round in circles with a complete package system for road redevelopment.

The flow of traffic.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Elmbridge Court roundabout between Cheltenham and Gloucester is one of the busiest traffic junctions in Gloucestershire. The purpose of the proposed upgrade is to tackle this congestion ‘hot spot’ on the A40 and to reduce journey times and improve reliability for vehicles travelling between Cheltenham, Churchdown, Gloucester and beyond.

The scheme proposes a series of improvements to Elmbridge Court roundabout to improve its capacity:

  • ‘Hamburger’ through lane
  • Widening of approaches
  • Installation of the latest traffic signal technology

Redevelopment of existing roundabout to improve traffic capacity. Additional lanes on all approaches and new hamburger lane to assist flow of traffic, new traffic signals and a new surface water drainage system.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

As with all highway projects, temporary traffic management causes extra challenges for all drivers and workers, not to mention the extra health and safety risks and the unpredictable weather conditions. Programmes are tight, designs have to be carefully thought through and reviewed from different angles.

PROJECT SOLUTION

With the original programme suggesting two concrete wet wells and confined space installations, the contractor was happy to work with Dutypoint to design a complete package system.

This greatly reduced installation time, gave the installers a more flexible programme and reduced potential health and safety risks on site.
