Project Summary

Dutypoint supplied a bespoke packaged plant room to support the major four-year restoration of the iconic Palm Houses at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, one of the most ambitious conservation projects in the UK.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

The Victoria Palm House restoration is a highly sensitive, large-scale heritage project involving complex upgrades to A-listed buildings that house more than 40% of RBGE’s rare and endangered plant collection. To facilitate essential environmental and mechanical services during the four-year construction programme (2024–2028), the project team required an interim, fully operational plant room. This solution needed to be both high-performing and compact enough to work safely within a protected heritage site with restricted access and minimal disruption.

PROJECT SOLUTION

To address the site’s logistical constraints, conservation priorities, and tight timelines, Dutypoint delivered a pre-assembled, off-site manufactured packaged plant room, providing a swift and efficient solution for the project’s temporary but essential service needs. This plug-and-play system was specifically designed to overcome limited site access and minimise disruption to the ongoing four-year restoration of the Grade A listed Victoria Palm House and its delicate plant collection.

The compact, all-in-one unit was built to precise specifications, including:

  • A Cat 5 booster
  • Plate heat exchangers
  • Secondary pump
  • Pressurisation unit with suitable vessels
  • Control valves
  • Heat meter
  • Fully integrated pipework and fittings
  • All housed within a single, compact enclosure

Factory testing in Dutypoint’s ISO9001 and ISO14001-accredited facility ensured full quality control and pre-commissioning under optimal conditions, significantly reducing the potential for costly on-site delays. Furthermore, utilising off-site manufacturing minimised disruption, site deliveries and waste, aligning with the project’s broader sustainability goals.

Dutypoint’s packaged plant room will ensure that heating and water systems necessary for both the site and conservation work will be reliably maintained throughout the project’s lifecycle, demonstrating the role of innovative fluid technology in supporting sustainable heritage regeneration.
