Cold Water Boosting – Sizing and Selection
Course aims
This course delivers a technical overview of the hydraulic, regulatory, and system design principles required for the correct sizing and specification of cold water booster sets, including Dutypoint MicroBOOST®, VG and VRX ranges.
What the course covers:
- System design
- Assessing inadequate mains pressure or flow
- Compliance with Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations to justify system boosting
- Identifying risks and design pitfalls
- Interpreting static and dynamic site measurements
Key learning outcomes:
By the end of the session, delegates will be able to:
Determine when boosting is required
Assess inadequate mains pressure or flow, building height and demand profile.
Define system pressure and flow requirements
Interpret static and dynamic site measurements, calculate residual outlet pressures, and account for factors affecting total dynamic head (TDH).
Size and select booster sets accurately
Apply industry guidance to calculate design flow and pressure requirements, and use pump curves and duty selection graphs to match system duty points.
Spot problems and avoid common errors
Evaluate closed-valve pressure, over-pressurisation, PRV coordination, pump staging under peak demand, and resilience strategies to eliminate single points of failure.
